Abstract

Carbon fixation and its redistribution are fundamental processes in C4 photosynthesis. This study examines enzymatic changes during ontogeny in two ecologically distinct C4 species: Amaranthus retroflexus and Salsola dendroides, under conditions of high light intensity and elevated temperatures. The results indicated that enzymatic activity in Amaranthus retroflexus significantly increased with leaf development, demonstrating enhanced carbon metabolism in mature leaves. Conversely, Salsola dendroides exhibited relatively stable enzymatic activity across all leaf stages, indicative of a metabolic homeostasis strategy. These findings underscore contrasting metabolic strategies: a rapid ontogenetic activation in Amaranthus retroflexus versus a stabilized metabolic approach in Salsola dendroides, thereby highlighting the complex relationship between leaf ontogeny and ecological adaptation in C4 plants.
